The Town of Qualicum Beach is seeking applications from energetic and enthusiastic candidates for the available position of Student in the Parks Department. The successful applicant will support the Parks Department and gain valuable practical and/or professional experience.
This position will be available on a temporary full-time basis for a period of up to three and a half (3.5) months with the anticipated start date in May 2026.
Typical duties will include:
- Planting flowers, weeding, and watering flower beds, planters, and hanging baskets;
- Weed control on hardscapes;
- Trail maintenance and irrigation maintenance;
- String line trimming, brush clearing, and mowing;
- Irrigation maintenance;
- Litter pick up;
- Other general labourer duties as assigned.
Required qualifications include:
- A student currently enrolled in a Post Secondary program on a full-time basis, returning to full-time studies in the fall term;
- Grade 12, plus a valid Class 5 Driver’s License with a safe driving record;
- Physical capability to safely complete continuous manual labour (e.g. bending, shoveling, lifting, pushing/pulling, etc.) in all weather conditions;
- Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, particularly when dealing with the public;
- Demonstrated ability to work as a part of a team as well as independently;
- Ability to follow direction, especially direction related to safe work practices.
The terms and conditions of employment are covered by the CUPE Local 401 Collective Agreement. The rate of pay is $20.49/hr (July 1, 2024 rate). Successful applicants will be expected to work 40 hours/week and shifts may include weekends. The successful candidate will be required to provide a recent driver’s license abstract.
