
Inspector - Trades II (Electrical)

The West Vancouver Planning, Development and Environmental Services Division has an immediate opening for a permanent full-time Inspector – Trades II (Electrical). The successful applicant will inspect varied and complex commercial, industrial (power and light), and residential electrical installations and equipment to ensure that the materials being used are approved by the Canadian Standards Association and that the completed work complies with bylaw requirements and safety regulations.
This position will be responsible for:- Reviewing plans for electrical installations submitted by owners, contractors, and engineers;
- Preparing inspection and technical reports, as required;
- Preparing and maintaining records, codes, regulations, and guidelines relating to work;
- Providing technical assistance and interpreting bylaws to anyone concerned with electrical installations;
- Providing information and advice to relevant departments in the District of West Vancouver, including Planning, Development, and Environmental Services;
- Inspecting other custom-made electrical equipment and products for conformance to C.S.A. specifications;
- Issuing Electrical Permits and recommending changes in Electrical and related Bylaws, as required;
- Assisting legal authorities with investigations of illegal wiring or tampering of wiring systems;
- Gathering and presenting evidence when bylaw violators are prosecuted in court; and,
- Other related duties, as required.
The preferred candidate is a team player who possesses: thorough knowledge of the Canadian Electrical Code and the Safety Standards Act; TSBC Bulletins and Directives; Municipal regulations and bylaws; extensive knowledge of C.S.A. specifications; and the ability to deal effectively with internal and external stakeholders such as professionals, contractors, and owners.
The successful candidate has completed Grade 12 and an electrical trade apprenticeship including considerable related field experience; provincial qualifications to serve as an Electrical Inspector or the ability to complete an Electrical Safety Officer Certification within six months of employment; and a minimum FSR “B” certification where FSR “A” or Safety Officer is considered an asset.
A valid BC Driver’s License and a vehicle are necessary for this position; mileage reimbursement is provided within relevant District Policy.
