Salary Range/ Wage Rate: PG T23 $3,164.63 - $3,734.48 bi-weekly
Our Water Services Department is seeking a Design Draftsperson I who will work with our engineering and CAD/ BIM teams to prepare, design and deliver engineering drawings related to Metro Vancouver’s facilities including water, liquid waste and other civil linear infrastructure works. Your drafting and design assignments may range from preliminary design up to records drawings, as well as operations and maintenance support drawings.
You are a technically intermediate CAD professional with wide ranging civil infrastructure design experience, including working experience in preparing civil utilities and/or linear infrastructure drawings of moderate complexity, writing and interpreting field notes, make technical computations and check the drafting works of one or more subordinates. You have several years of proven experience using design tools such as Autodesk Civil 3D and have considerable independence of judgement in performing civil drafting and design tasks.
This role:
- Prepares preliminary and final engineering drawings of water, sewage and drainage systems including sewage treatment plants, water reservoirs, pumping stations and ancillary structures.
- Prepares detailed structural, mechanical and electrical drawings, topographic plans, tabulations, bills of material and performs the technical calculations required.
- Performs design and layout work involving water and sewer pipelines and appurtenances such as valve chambers, under the direction of an engineer; conducts investigations of proposed water and sewer pipeline routes.
- Prepares cost estimates and job schedules and conducts field inspections of work sites; provides design and technical information; requests survey assistance when appropriate.
- Reduces and plots field notes of traverses, topographic and hydrographic surveys; calculates quantities of fill and cut at spoil sites.
- Prepares orders for legal plans, existing and future underground service reference plans and maintains progress reports.
- Maintains records of changes and modifications; updates 'as constructed' plans as appropriate and prepares 'as built' drawings for completed construction and installation projects.
- May check the work of one or more drafting subordinates.
- Performs clerical and statistical duties related to the work.
- Performs related work as required.
To be successful, you have:
- Graduation from an Institute of Technology Certificate program in an appropriate discipline plus sound related experience, or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
- Sound knowledge of municipal engineering design and computerized drafting principles, practices, techniques and standards; and of mathematics.
- Sound knowledge of construction methods, practices and materials.
- Ability to perform skilled drafting and to do the associated calculations accurately.
- Ability to perform engineering design work of intermediate complexity and to prepare cost estimates and job schedules.
- Ability to inspect construction work for technical adequacy and conformance to Municipal standards and specifications.
- Ability to work efficiently with limited supervision and to understand and carry out written and oral instructions.
- Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and specifications.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with a variety of internal and external contacts.
- Good visual and numerical aptitude.
- Skill in the use of drafting and computing instruments.
