The West Vancouver Bylaw & Licensing Services Department has an opening for a permanent, full-time Business Licence Inspector. Reporting to the Manager of Bylaw & Licensing Services, the successful candidate will be responsible for:
- Reviewing, processing and making determinations on the approval or rejection of business licence applications including out of town, commercial, residential, and short-term rental businesses; coordinating and scheduling related building, trade and fire inspections and participating as appropriate.
- Investigating and inspecting businesses, business premises including home-based businesses and short-term rentals, trades operations and construction sites to identify bylaw violations;
- Ensuring proper licenses and permits are obtained and that businesses are operating in accordance with all applicable bylaws and related regulations and statutes;
- Investigating and processing complaints pertaining to the District’s Business Licence Bylaw and other related bylaws; determining appropriate action to gain compliance; enforcing non-compliances through warning notices, tickets or legal action; liaising with other departments and provincial bodies as required; providing applicants with information and direction as required;
- Recommending license suspension or cancellation for non-compliance to bylaws; preparing information for prosecutions and giving evidence in Court, as required;
- Liaising with community groups and organizations and serves as the municipal contact to coordinate the resolution to various concerns related to business license applications and business operation
- Preparing reports and correspondence including reports to Council; developing and recommending new or drafts amendments to bylaws, policies, procedures and documents related to business undertakings and operations
- Performing other related duties, as required.
The preferred candidate will possess considerable knowledge of the bylaws, statutes and applicable regulations related to the licensing of business and trade operations; the ability to investigate complaints and to interpret, explain and enforce bylaws and other regulations with tact, impartiality, firmness, and the use of sound judgement; and, the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with a variety of internal and external contacts.
The successful candidate has completed Bylaw Compliance, Enforcement and Investigative Skills I II and possesses related experience in inspectional or regulatory work, or an equivalent combination of training and experience. A valid Driver’s Licence in the Province of British Columbia is required.
The successful candidate will be required to supply a police information check and a copy of their credentials.

40 hours per week (hours and days of work may vary)
Rate of Pay:
$40.13 per hour
(This position has a pay structure with five steps which increase annually.)
