This position works in the Police - Youth Services organizational unit. This is professional social services counselling work aimed at preventing and reducing negative contact with the police and criminal behaviour by children and youth throughout the City. The Youth and Family Counsellor provides direct and confidential prevention and intervention services through clinical counselling to children, youth and their families through a variety of assessments and therapeutic approaches. The work involves considerable independence of judgment and action and requires the ability to function effectively under discordant conditions with minimal supervision. Work performance is reviewed by a supervisor on the basis of accepted professional standards of practice. Performs related work as required.
Qualifications include a Master’s Degree in Psychology, Social Work or related field supplemented with a registered designation of a professional association plus considerable experience in children, youth and family clinical counselling, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience. Thorough knowledge of the principles, professional standards of practice and techniques required in providing clinical counselling services. Considerable knowledge of the British Columbia Association of Clinical Counsellor’s (i.e. BCACC’s) Code of Ethics. Sound knowledge of the resources available for at risk children and youth in the region. Ability to conduct interviews and engage youth and parent(s)/guardian(s) in clinical counselling sessions; recognize, assess and deal with behavioural and social problems related to at risk children/youth; prepare reports and maintain records and files for assigned portfolio. Eligibility for Registered Clinical Counsellor or Clinical Social Worker (e.g. RCC, CCC, MSW) and a valid Driver’s Licence for the Province of British Columbia are required. The incumbent will be required to obtain and maintain an RCMP Enhanced Security Clearance.
Schedule: 70 hours bi-weekly; Monday to Friday from 8:00 AM – 4:00 PM (Mutual Agreement from Monday to Friday, 8:00 AM – 8:00 PM).
