Reporting to the Director, Human Rights and Equity Initiatives, in Sheridan College’s Centre for Equity and Inclusion, the Dispute Resolution Officer is an impartial dispute resolution practitioner responsible for serving the Sheridan Community through resolving internal concerns and complaints related to human rights and equity. The incumbent provides early intervention, problem solving, information and referrals using a variety of alternative dispute resolution mechanisms; and is responsible for conducting complex formal investigations. As a subject matter expert on Equity, Inclusion and Human Rights, the incumbent is responsible for analyzing complex fact scenarios, and interpreting and applying Sheridan's policies and procedures, the Ontario Human Rights Code, the Occupational Health and Safety Act, any other applicable legislation, and collective agreements, where appropriate.
What You’ll Be Doing
- Creating informal resolution strategies so that parties who have potential complaints or concerns are supported; Uses Alternative Dispute Resolution and early intervention processes to assist in informal resolution.
- Identifying rights and responsibilities, appropriate referrals, and options for resolution under relevant policies and programs.
- Addressing concerns and complaints from Sheridan community (leaders, employees, students and campus visitors).
- Initiating and conducting the investigative process for complex investigations including gathering information, conducting interviews, assessing evidence and issuing findings/recommendations.
- Documenting case investigations, direct testimony etc. in written reports.
- Providing clear, well-written and instructive findings/reports identifying concrete recommendations for corrective or preventative measures.
- Preparing recommendations to address and remove systemic problems and working with Sheridan partners and colleagues to address root causes.
- Participating in investigations and the grievance arbitration process that flow from collective agreement applications of human rights legislation and respectful workplace matters.
- Participating in projects, events or other duties/activities as assigned.

The successful candidate will also possess the following qualifications:
- 4-year Bachelor’s degree (or 3 year diploma/degree + post graduate certificate in related field)
- 5-years of experience with investigations, dispute resolution and human rights (or an equivalent combination of education and experience)
- Experience interpreting legislation and policy related to discrimination, harassment and human rights generally
- Expertise in alternative dispute resolution and mediation techniques
- Direct experience conducting human rights investigations and understanding, analyzing and assessing evidence
- Ability to manage a caseload, prioritize and organize work effectively, manage multiple high priorities and deadlines, and maintain detailed records in a fast-paced environment
- Excellent analytical, research and creative problem-solving skills
- Superior writing skills, including the ability to write clear and cogent investigation reports
