THE POSITION
As a key member of the Senior Management Team (SMT), the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) provides strategic leadership across financial and accounting operations, enterprise risk management, financial reporting, and the development of robust internal control and compliance frameworks.
The CFO plays an integral role in advancing the sustainable growth of Entente described in the Strategic Plan 2030, including by working in close partnership with the Director of Business Development to generate growth in membership and plan participation, partnership development, and revenue diversification initiatives. This includes contributing to negotiations, finalizing organizational partnership agreements, and providing ongoing financial and strategic guidance to ensure alignment with Entente Plus requirements, partner satisfaction, and opportunities for growth.
The ideal candidate is a highly collaborative executive with strong business acumen and a forward-looking mindset. A practical understanding of artificial intelligence (AI) and its application in areas such as finance, compliance, analytics, and third-party vendor management is highly valued. Demonstrated experience implementing AI-enabled solutions, combined with a commitment to continuous learning, will support Entente in navigating the evolving technological landscape and enhancing operational effectiveness.
The CFO is expected to consistently demonstrate the highest standards of integrity, objectivity, professional competence and maturity, and confidentiality, while contributing to a purpose-driven organizational culture.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Strategic Leadership
- Develop and evaluate short- and long-term strategic financial objectives that will advance Entente’s growth and development.
- Oversee the accounting and financial operations for Entente and the districts, 1316342 Ontario Inc. (a wholly owner subsidiary), and the Entente Foundation.
- Lead and manage the operating, capital and the group benefits budget processes, that ensures compliance with the strategic objectives of Entente.
- Report financial results to key stakeholders.
- Manage Entente’s investments review and reporting cycle; work with the CEO, Senior Financial and Investments Analyst, the investment consultant and the portfolio managers to assess trends in financial markets and bring tactical and strategic investment recommendations to the Board of Directors.
- Oversee the Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) framework by working with the CEO, Senior Financial and Investments Analyst and Chief Administrative Officer to recommend changes to the ERM Policy, develop and conduct regular feedback sessions with SMT and provide regular reports to the Board of Directors.
- Participate in continuous professional development opportunities (courses and conferences).
- Manage the corporate insurance renewal process. Identify business risks to maintain appropriate insurance coverage for Entente Education Canada, 1316342 Ontario Inc. and Entente Foundation.
- Liaise with District treasurers and provide training and on-going support as needed.
Financial Management
- Report financial results for the operating budget and the group benefits budget to the Board of Directors, committees (benefits, audit), corporate members or other stakeholders.
- Maintain stakeholder relationships with external auditors, investment managers and consultants, banks, legal counsel, government agencies, and insurance partners.
- Provide direction, feedback and monitor the performance of the members of Finance Department.
- Manage the financial audit process and support the Audit Committee.
- Monitor the effectiveness and implement changes to internal financial and operations controls.
- Manage cash requirements for the operating budget and Entente Plus group insurance plans from the investment funds.
- Ensure compliance with applicable legislation for financial and tax reporting purposes.
Operations
- Oversee membership fees billing and the collection process managed by the Senior Financial and Investments Analyst.
- Alongside the CEO, manage the operations of the building subsidiary including budgeting, monitoring the work of building managers, selecting vendors, planning and managing renovation projects.
- Manage lease renewals for 1316342 Ontario Inc.
- Oversee payroll process, renewal and administration of the employee benefits plan.
CANDIDATE QUALIFICATIONS
- Minimum 10 years’ experience in a senior management role in accounting and finance in the not-for-profit or private sectors.
- Exemplary leadership, communication and interpersonal skills.
- Possesses strong financial acumen, and business savvy.
- Experience in applying metrics and other data to support decision-making, drive results, and increase transparency and accountability.
- A track record of being actively engaged in incorporating AI into best practices.
- Exceptional verbal, written, and communication skills. Able to easily translate financial data and information to stakeholders.
- Works collaboratively with senior leaders and all levels of management.
- Strives for excellence, invests in remaining abreast of and applying best practices. Tests, evaluates, and course corrects. Fosters an environment of learning and constant improvement.
- Ensures high standards across all accountabilities. Goes above and beyond to ensure accuracy in all that they do.
- Entente is a bilingual, national organization; fluency in French is an asset.
- Professional certification (CPA) preferred or experiential equivalent.
COMPENSATION
A competitive compensation package including a base salary (range between $190,000 to $200,000), matching contribution to a defined pension plan, comprehensive health & dental benefits, and generous vacation time will be provided.
