About the Role:
The Youth Transitions Program (YTP) supports vulnerable youth, leading up to and at critical academic transition points, with the community supports and life skill development they need for educational attainment and future success. Program delivery includes, but is not limited to, the development of youth-centered plans, facilitation of workshops, supportive counseling, and the coordination of peer mentorship.
The Youth Volunteer will support the staff in the community, at schools, local YMCA facilities or another appropriate site. The role is responsible for the supporting Youth Support Workers (staff) in program delivery. The Youth Volunteer carries out their duties in a professional manner and in accordance with all YMCA policies and procedures, standards of practice, health and safety standards, child protection standards and contractual, legal, and regulatory requirements.
There would also be opportunities to volunteer for the Sky High summer camp, a two-week camp in August with an overnight component, that is run by YTP.
The volunteer position requires a minimum of 8 hours of service a month, and may involve travel to various locations across the Greater Edmonton Area.
Responsibilities:
- Actively engaging with Youth, ensuring they are seen, heard, valued and safe.
- Ensure youth and self are safe, in accordance with YMCA Health and Safety Procedures and Child Protection Policies.
- Report incidents to Youth Support Workers (YSW) and Youth Supervisor in a timely manner
- Provide service coordination and navigation in support of the Youth Support Worker.
- Support YSW's in facilitation of workshops and recreation activities, ensuring youth are actively participating in accordance with YMCA Core Values.
- Acting professionally when supporting programming held with schools, community agencies, the YMCA, and other organizations.
- Effective communication of scheduling and day-to-day operations to the Youth Supervisor.
Qualifications:
- 18 years of age or older
- Can provide a clear Police Information Check with Vulnerable Sector Search.
- Willingness to engage with youth aged 10+ from a variety of backgrounds.
- Lifeguard Certified is an asset
- Willingness to commute to various locations across the Greater Edmonton Region.
