SCOPEWe’re seeking two energetic, collaborative individuals to join our Urban Forest Stewardship team. In this role, you’ll spend much of your time leading school groups in hands-on tree planting activities, helping students connect with nature and learn about the benefits of healthy urban forests.
You’ll also support community tree planting events, volunteer restoration projects, and other programs that engage residents in caring for Surrey’s parks, trees, and natural areas. Schedules will vary based on programming needs, with regular weekend work required.
RESPONSIBILITIES- Lead and support environmental education and stewardship programs for school groups, volunteers, community organizations, and the public
- Facilitate hands-on tree planting and invasive plant removal activities by providing instruction, guidance, and encouragement to participants
- Foster positive relationships with participants, volunteers, staff, and the public
- Demonstrate strong communication and interpersonal skills when delivering nature education messaging
- Ensure activities are conducted safely and in accordance with established safety protocols
- Work effectively both independently and as part of a team
- Assist with event logistics, including loading, transporting, setting up, maintaining, and storing tools, equipment, plants, and program materials
- Operate a City truck and, at times, tow a utility trailer
- Support program administration and other urban forest stewardship initiatives
- Perform physically demanding outdoor work in a variety of weather conditions and terrain
- Monitor participants and respond appropriately to issues as they arise
- Performs other duties as required
QUALIFICATIONS- Completion of Grade 12, supplemented by one year of relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of training and experience
- Occupational First Aid Level 1 Certificate, or an acceptable equivalent
- Valid Class 5 BC Driver’s License with a safe driving record
- Experience working with elementary school students is considered an asset
