On-Call Firefighter
$23.60 to $36.58 per hour (2026 rates), depending on qualifications and length of service, plus 13% in lieu of benefits
The District of North Saanich Fire Department is accepting applications for up to six (6) On-Call Firefighter positions.
Under the direction of the Fire Chief or designate, the On-Call Firefighter provides fire suppression, rescue, emergency medical response, public education, and related emergency services in support of the North Saanich Fire Department’s operations.
The position may include scheduled duty shifts and responding from home, work, or other locations to emergency incidents as required. On-Call Firefighters also participate in scheduled training, operational preparedness activities, public education initiatives, and departmental programs. The role requires sound judgment, professionalism, teamwork, and a commitment to maintaining the skills, competencies, and availability necessary to serve the community safely and effectively.
Applications from individuals who have completed NFPA 1001 Firefighter Levels I and II will be accepted on an ongoing basis. The Department anticipates conducting a recruit training class beginning in January 2027 for applicants without previous firefighting experience.
The ideal candidate will:
- Be physically fit and able to meet the demands of firefighting duties;
- Demonstrate a strong desire to serve the community;
- Successfully complete a criminal record check; and
- Hold a valid B.C. Class 5 driver’s licence with an air brake endorsement or be willing and able to obtain the endorsement.
This is a Union position and is subject to the terms and conditions of the Collective Agreement between the District of North Saanich and the International Association of Firefighters Local 5509.
