Reporting to the Manager, Engineering, the Engineer provides a wide range of engineering support services that will ensure technical soundness, reliability, safety and cost effectiveness of the utility and its Electrical Distribution Power System. The Engineer will support customers through Development Planning responsibilities. This involves working with customers early on in the connection process by conducting capacity assessments and cost estimates, reaching out to developers or customers’ consultants to establish relationships, and undertaking design discussions to guide the development of connection configurations to better align with our Conditions of Service. In addition the Engineer plays an integral role in developing the annual Toronto Hydro Peak Demand Load Forecast that reflect among other things, the long-term impact of Climate Action Planning on the Toronto Hydro grid. The successful incumbent will utilize various planning and load forecasting inputs from vehicle and transit electrification, Distributed Energy Resources, Demand Response initiatives as well as Grid Modernization to sequence infrastructure investments to prepare the Toronto Hydro grid for the future.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Provide short and long term distribution system load forecast; conduct and analyze technical and economic planning to identify short and long term distribution system requirements supplying the load reliably and efficiently
- Conduct technical analysis like capacity assessments and cost estimates
- Stay abreast of trends and technical innovations that result in potential business development opportunities
- Liaise with customers, planners, technical consultants, and internal stakeholders to support connection conversations and load forecasting
- Respond to technical requests and inquiries on Toronto Hydro’s Conditions of Service while seeking support from other business units as necessary
- Translate customer requirements to internal stakeholders to provide an accurate description of customer needs to the organization
- Act as a reliable point of contact to address technical customer inquiries
- Provide informed support or leadership on strategic technical projects.
- Contributes in short and long term strategic planning
- Provides timely technical support and consultation for load forecasting, demonstrates effective project management and process efficiencies; reviews, develops and/or presents business proposals, plans, designs, processes, operational procedures and practices
- Responsible for the timely, technically accurate and cost-effective application of engineering practices
- Compares alternatives based on cost/benefit considerations, customer needs, safety, statistical analysis and engineering principles, and recommends the optimum solution
- Manage relationships with inter-organizational business units and external customers as required
- May be called upon to act as a team or project leader
REQUIREMENTS:
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (Electrical preferred)
- Registered Professional Engineer in the Province of Ontario
- 4+ years of Engineering experience
- Experience within the electrical utility industry, electrical/technical consulting industry, is considered an asset
- Experience with statistical analytical techniques, data mining, predictive modelling and machine learning is considered as asset
- Experience with database and programming languages (eg: Python) and data manipulation/integration using SQL, Oracle, Hadoop or similar tools would be considered an asset
- Electrical distribution system planning and/or design experience is preferred
- Knowledge and experience in Alteryx and Tableau are an asset
- Strong verbal and written communication skills
- Effective skills in project management operations, budgeting, business process and productivity improvements

Toronto Hydro has introduced a Hybrid Work Arrangement. This position allows for remote work up to three days per week, based on business needs. Employees will be required to come onsite on those days when they are involved in activities that they or their leader feel are better conducted in person. You are expected to live in Ontario and within reasonable commuting distance of the office.
