Job Summary
Reporting to the HR Business Partner Manager, Employee Relations, the successful candidate will be responsible for providing advice and guidance to leaders and employees on the consistent application and interpretation of legislation, HR processes and protocols, corporate policies and collective agreements as applicable. The HR Business Partner will also provide expertise to support the effective investigation and resolution of workplace disputes and will work closely with Union representatives to resolve grievances. The successful candidate will also represent the City’s interests while attending mediation/arbitration.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Ensure compliance with labour and employment legislation/regulations.
- Work as a trusted advisor who contributes to discussions and influences decision making when advising leadership on HR issues.
- Make informed recommendations to decision makers on complex employee and labour relations issues.
- Make pragmatic recommendations through integrated HR management practices that ensure policies and legislative requirements are met, while allowing business needs to be delivered.
- Lead workplace investigations in accordance with the Respectful Workplace Policy.
- Work as a strategic partner with Management to resolve workplace issues and grievances.
- Conduct information/training sessions on relevant topics to educate leaders and employees
- Work closely with Legal Counsel to represent the City's interests in mediation, arbitration and at tribunals.
- Work closely with other centres of expertise to ensure seamless service delivery of HR services
- Participate in the Return to Work/Accommodation process.
- Undertake various research projects to support policy and process development, as well as collective bargaining.
Skills and Qualifications
- University degree in the field of Human Resources Management, Business, Industrial Relations or a related discipline.
- Minimum of 5 years of progressive Human Resources experience.
- Master’s degree in Industrial Relations and experience working with union representatives are considered valuable assets.
- Knowledge, experience and expertise in the areas of workplace dispute resolution is required.
- Excellent verbal and written communication, research, organizational, analytical and problem solving skills are required.
- Strong ability to influence outcomes and negotiate viable solutions to workplace problems, often when issues are contentious or when the parties are entrenched in their positions.
Must have the ability to travel to various locations.
Note: Successful candidates should be prepared for rotation between departments, with appropriate notice, in order to fill vacancies, provide developmental opportunities for staff and to support the operational needs of the client departments.
Hourly Rate/Salary: $ 86,858.00 - $ 115,812.00
