The Opportunity
The Information Technology Department provides information technology expertise and professional services to all City departments, affiliated agencies (Barrie Public Library, Barrie Police Services) and area municipalities receiving Barrie fire dispatch services. The Department is responsible for delivering, administering, managing and supporting (in partnership with the business units) all data and voice communications, including but not limited to network infrastructure, servers, storage infrastructure, printers, computing infrastructure, applications and software, databases, web services, geographic information systems, and project and portfolio management. The Department provides daily technology support to over 1100 users at more than 40 City locations across the City.
Under the general guidance and direction of the Supervisor of GIS Operations, the GIS Student position is responsible for assisting with the creation and maintenance of corporate GIS spatial and attribute data, which involves data entry, editing, and quality control. Additionally, this position reviews corporate GIS datasets, generates maps, tables, graphs, and charts, and collects GIS field data. Overall, this position plays an integral role in the management of spatial and GIS data, which is integrated with the operations of various City systems and supports City-wide projects, programs, and initiatives.

Education (degree/diploma/certifications)
- Currently enrolled in or is a student in Secondary School, College, or University program in Geography, Geographic Information Systems, Resource Mapping Technician, Environmental Technician, or related discipline*
- Minimum of 16 years of age or turning 16 by the end of the calendar year and must have attended one of the academic establishments listed above the year in which they are applying for employment and/or returning the following year
Experience
- Demonstrated experience performing duties related to the above mentioned major responsibilities
Knowledge/Skill/Ability - General knowledge of GIS principles, cartography, mapping systems, geodatabases, assets and operations
- Demonstrated ability to:
- maintain a high standard of public relations at all times
- work collaboratively in a group setting to achieve a desired objective, goal and/or outcome
- interact effectively and courteously with all levels of staff and contacts in a community/client service environment
- Basic customer service, attention to detail, administrative, interpersonal, oral communication, organizational, problem solving, and written communication skills
- Basic computer literacy utilizing Microsoft Office Suite (Access, Excel, Outlook, Vision, Word), ESRI Suite (ArcGIS), GPS applications and Hardware (Collector for ArcGIS)

Work Term: May - August (4 Months)

- Please note that the City has a Hybrid Work Program Policy in place that may allow for a hybrid work arrangement for employees who meet eligibility requirements.
Hours: The normal hours of work are 35 hours per week
Wage: $18.94 to $25.79 per hour
